Old picture of the course

In the early 1930's, some citizens of Holsworthy were invited to join the Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club. However. it turned out that one of their company was not a professional person, i.e. Doctor, Solicitor, Reverend etc, and his application for membership was rejected. Because of this, none of the golfers took up membership. However in 1936 there was a possibility of renting a piece of land approximately 90 acres at Killatree. By no stretch of imagination could it have been termed "desirable land". Indeed, it was most "undesirable". A pasture analysis would probably have revealed that at least 90% of the vegetation

comprised of common rush, sedge grass, agrostis and Yorkshire fog grass, all growing on a heavy clay soil.

However, it was the astute bargaining of the late Mr Stanley Rowland who acquired the land on behalf of a number of founder trustees at a rent of £30 per annum with an option to purchase within 10 years for a sum of £600. On part of this land, a nine hole golf course was constructed. The option to purchase was exercised in 1943. During the "Dig for Victory" days of the Second World War the land had to be ploughed for corn and vegetable crops.

After the war, the land was turned back into a nine hole course, with the land not being used for golf being rented out for grass keep. By 1975, a new clubhouse was built. Since then, various additions have been made to the building, mainly the kitchen, dining rooms, store rooms and the Committee room.

In 1978, work started on turning the nine holes into eighteen. On Captains Day 1980, the full eighteen holes were used for the first time and then brought into general play at the beginning of 1981. Since then extra facilities have been provided with undercover teaching/practice bays together with a short chipping/pitching area. The resident PGA Teaching Professional, who has a very well stocked shop, is also available for lessons for members and visitors.

The course itself is now considered to be a very good test of golf for players of all abilities. Some small greens together with some very difficult driving holes puts the premium on accurate golf.
